Independent School Teachers

Independent school teachers are welcome to participate in Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminars. However, please read the following carefully:

The Institute defines an “independent school” as any K–12 school that charges tuition. In order for an independent school teacher to apply to a Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminar, his/her school must be a member of the Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School Program.

The Institute underwrites a portion of the cost for an independent school teacher to attend a seminar, and the remaining portion must be paid by the teacher or his/her school. This is in addition to the nonrefundable registration fee ($50). The independent school cost-share rate schedule is as follows:

  • 6-Day Seminar: $1,500
  • 6-Day Seminar: $750 if commuting or attending only during the day (without room and board)
  • Teacher Seminar Summit: $1,000
  • Teacher Seminar Summit: $500 if commuting or attending only during the day (without room and board)
  • 3-Day Regional Seminar: $500

Exceptions to this payment policy are rare and only granted for teachers from independent schools with very low tuition or a large percentage of scholarships and economically disadvantaged students. If you think your school qualifies for this type of exemption, please submit a letter from the head of your school detailing the need for an exemption to:

Travel Stipend

Each participant in a 6-Day Seminar or the Teacher Seminar Summit is eligible to receive a flat travel stipend of $350.00. If you are traveling internationally or from Alaska or Hawaii you will receive a flat $500 travel stipend. Please note that you no longer have to submit paperwork to receive this stipend. No supplements will be given in cases where travel exceeds the stipend. Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from the seminar, and must attend all required seminar activities in order to receive the full stipend. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a delay or partial or full abrogation of the stipend. All travel stipends are mailed after completion of the full program.

Participants in 3-Day Regional Seminars are not eligible to receive a travel stipend.
